Tznius in Dress Alludes to Inner Nobility
Garments That Blend Dignity and Pleasantness
In the concluding verses of Mishlei (Proverbs), King Solomon describes the qualities of an Eishes Chayil (Woman of Valor) in poetic terms. Concerning her clothes he uses the words עוז והדר לבושה – “She dresses in clothes of strength and regality” (Mishlei 31:25). Our Sages say, אין עוז אלא תורה – “strength lies in conforming with the ordinances of the Torah” (Shir HaShirim Rabba 2:10). The clothes of the Eishes Chayil (Woman of Valor) are described with the noun עוז, as they display her strength and steadfastness, being totally in compliance with the laws of tznius. At the same time her garments are הדר – they are dignified and display tasteful refinement. The verse alludes to two diverse interests that this righteous woman combines with absolute harmony. On the one hand her clothes are an embodiment of strength, as they fulfill to perfection the requirements of the Torah. On the other hand, her clothes are aesthetically pleasing and eminently tasteful. With them she brings simcha (joy) to her husband, close family and friends.
When a Jewish woman dresses in a manner that is modest and graceful, the purity of her refined being, her good midos (character traits) and her yiras shomayim (attribute to be G-d fearing) shine through. They give her the very special grace with which Jewish women are blessed, as our Sages say, אמר רבי ישמעאל בנות ישראל יפות הן – “Rabbi Yishmael said, Jewish women are particularly attractive” (Nedarim 66a).
The attention the Eishes Chayil (Woman of Valor) pays to her clothes and general appearance, reveals the inner satisfaction she derives from her great mission in life: to enable herself, her husband and her children to realize their full potential לכבוד השם ותורתו – to the honor of Hashem and His holy Torah. The inner tranquillity reflected by her happy countenance and noble manner of dress, bear testimony to the fact that she appreciates the great privilege of building a true Jewish home. Hence, the end of the aforementioned verse in Mishlei (Proverbs), ותשחק ליום אחרון – “she completes her life with serenity,” born out of a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.
