Weekly Classes

Talmud for Beginners for men: Mondays & Thursdays (See Calendar for times)

Announcing the formation of a breakthrough class in the study of Talmud for beginners. Rabbi Yaakov Rich will help you navigate the sea of Talmud by teaching syntax, vocabulary, relevant historical background facts and full explanations for the topic at hand, so the material is fully understood by all who attend. Two nights a week we will gather to study Talmud just like it is taught in the major yeshivas around the world.

We will not be using the ArtScroll gemara. Rather, available for all attendees will a students edition of the gemara (to be determined) with the authentic Hebrew text in the front of the book, with a linear translation in the back of the book.

The class will run for one hour, and will have two parts. The first part will be a half hour introduction, reading and explanation of the gemara to be studied that night. The second part will be chavrusa learning, i.e. all participants will pair off and practice reading, translating and explaining the gemara to each other. The class will require patience, determination, and consistancy, but in the end will pay big, big dividends.

This class is for you if:

  • When you open a gemara all you see is Greek (even though you know that it is Aramaic — there may some Hellenism issues we need to discuss)
  • You have been learning for some time, however, you still find translating a great challenge
  • You seriously want to learn how to learn gemara
  • You are looking to become an independent learner of gemara
  • You are looking for a stimulating, challenging class
  • You don’t want to waste your nights in front of the television anymore
