Flooded Jewish Houston: Ways To Help

NEWS FROM AGUDATH ISRAEL

Disaster Relief Fund
August 28, 2017

Agudath Israel of America’s hopes and prayers are with the residents of Houston and other Galveston Bay cities, who are struggling with the ongoing rain and terrible flooding brought by Hurricane Harvey.

Our sympathies go out to all Texans who have suffered loss of life, and to those who have tragically lost their homes and possessions. And we have only admiration for all the emergency workers, both local and from other parts of the country, who are working around the clock to rescue those in danger.

Although the storm is still ongoing and the full extent of its toll on Houston’s Jewish community still unknown, some of its families have already been hit hard by flooding

As we have done over the years when disaster strikes, Agudath Israel of America is serving as a conduit for sending humanitarian assistance like food, clothing and, in this case, Yomtov needs, to Jewish families and institutions in need.

Donations for that purpose can be sent to Agudath Israel’s offices at 42 Broadway, 14th Floor, New York, NY 10004 (checks should be made out to Agudath Israel but marked “Disaster Relief Fund”).

FROM THE JEWISH FEDERATION OF GREATER DALLAS

Your Help Is Greatly Needed

I want to help!

100% of all funds donated will go immediately to help those most in need.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas has opened an emergency relief fund to support communities and individuals in Houston, San Antonio, Galveston, Corpus Christi and other areas that have been hammered by Hurricane Harvey. With record breaking volumes of rain having fallen through the weekend and expected to continue through tomorrow, extensive damage is continuing to mount. Jewish neighborhoods were particularly hit hard by flooding.

Lee Wunsch, CEO of the Houston Federation, reports that the amount of rain and resulting flooding has surpassed that of the massive storm two years ago. Bayous and tributaries are flooding beyond their banks and roads are impassable. People whose homes are flooding are being advised to go up to their roofs so they can be evacuated; emergency workers were evacuating stranded residents through the night.

Additionally, the Houston Federation is coordinating their community recovery efforts with the Houston JCC and Houston’s Jewish Family Service.

As the need for materials and volunteer opportunities becomes available, we will keep you updated.

We know that several Jewish communal institutions that flooded two years ago have flooded again, but communities in the affected areas won’t be able to start assessing the scope of damage to institutions and members of their communities until the rain stops and roads become passable.

Please provide your support to help our neighbors to the south during this devastating time.

HOSTING NEEDS

When Jewish residents of the area are able to leave Houston, we would like to have available for them home hospitality here in Dallas. Please reply to me if you can host a family, adults or singles. Please include your cell number, e-mail and home address. Also, how many adult(s) and child(ren) you are able to host.

Thank you for your help at this critical time. No doubt, your acts of kindness will bring much needed merit during the upcoming Day of Judgment. Wishing you a Kesiva V’Chasima Tova.
