An aspect of tznius often overlooked nowadays:For a Bas Yisroel (Jewish woman)Â to be careful not to dress like the general public is far from sufficient. She may not be dressing in an immodest way, but her dress might nonetheless be unrefined and below the standard set by the laws of tznius. This is because, whilst pritzus (immodesty) is a negative and wrong form of dress and behavior, tznius is not simply a neutral type of dress and conduct. Rather, tznius is a positively refined way of dress and conduct. Unfortunately, many are not aware of this truth and satisfy themselves with the fact that the accusing word “immodest” cannot be thrown against them.
To our great misfortune, a large proportion of those amongst whom we live practice appalling and outrageous immodesty and have eliminated decency and a sense of shame from their code of conduct. As a result of this relentless exposure to corruption, many of our people, even those who resist imitating those around them, have nevertheless lost the understanding that tznius is manifested by positive nobility of character, truly refined behavior and an appreciation for the graceful, dignified and modest forms of dress that so beautifully complement the Jewish woman’s personality.
